NEBULA - Xplorer
Explore the mission behind
NEBULA-Xplorer project
a pioneering Dutch satellite mission exploring how black holes
consume material from nearby stars. Launching around
2030, it aims to unlock new insights
into black holes and the origins of the universe. Here, you can
learn more about this exciting mission and how it connects science,
education, and innovation.
-
The Mission
How do black holes consume stars? NEBULA-Xplorer studies X-ray binaries to unlock the secrets of the universe.
-
The Journey
From student design to launch in 2030 — explore the steps behind building a real space mission.
01 THE MISSION
Exploring how black holes consume matter
NEBULA-Xplorer is a student-led Dutch satellite mission studying X-ray binaries to understand matter near black holes. The project combines research on extreme gravity with hands-on satellite construction. Launch for NEBULA-Xplorer is planned for 2030.

SCIENCE
What we study
NEBULA-Xplorer investigates X-ray binaries, including systems with black holes and neutron stars. By observing how matter behaves in these extreme environments, the mission helps researchers better understand accretion processes and cosmic variability.
-
TECHNOLOGY
How we observe
The mission uses a compact satellite with X-ray optics and detectors to capture high-energy signals from space. Its design allows for long-duration observations, helping scientists collect data over time instead of only in short moments.
-
OIMPACT
Why it matters
NEBULA-Xplorer is not only a research mission, but also an educational one. Students, researchers, and industry partners work together to design, build, and test a real satellite, creating both scientific knowledge and future talent for the Dutch space sector.

02THE SATELLITE
Inside the NEBULA-Xplorer spacecraft
The NEBULA-Xplorer spacecraft is a compact scientific satellite
designed to observe high-energy X-ray radiation from extreme cosmic
environments. It combines a specialized instrument with multiple
supporting systems that enable it to operate in space, collect data,
and communicate with Earth. Each component on board has a specific
function, from generating power and maintaining stability to
capturing and processing scientific data. Together, these systems
form a fully integrated platform designed for precise and
long-duration observations.
